Love this book! Well written! Ordered 2 more for my friends. One of them is on his way to the Netherlands as a Christmas present. Wish they made a CD! Would be nice to listen to it in my car! Asclepius finally shows up in a modern version instead of the "golden old ones" For a deeper understanding of Acsclepius read THE HERMETICA by Timothy Freke & Peter Gandy or punch in Hermes Trismegistus! Good luck and enjoy! Don't get discouraged by some of the "Philosophers" who try to score points! Most of them use the left side of the brain only and forgot to combine knowledge with intuition!

This is an accurate and interesting take on the Perfect Discourse. The author's lentghy and well researched introduction proved insightful and valuable.

This translation of the Asclepius is based upon a manuscript found in the works of the N. African Platonist, Apuleius of Madaura (ca.125-180 AD), who is best known for his epic novel, the Metamorphosis. Modern scholarship has followed the judgment of St Augustine who does not mention Apuleius as the author or translator in City of God (8.23). Due to the Platonist's intimate involvement in Augustine's discussion on the Asclepius in the City of God, it is assumed that Augustine definitely would have named the author if he knew who it was for certain. Thus Augustine's silence--paired with modern philological comparitive analysis of the text affirming it not to be the work of Apuleius--seems to have closed the case for Apuleius' hand in the direct transmission or authorship of the great Hermetic work: it is dated between 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Interestingly, though, is the amendment the scribe made to the corpus of Apuleius; he grafted the Asclepius to the body of Apuleius' works for a specific reason; and this points to the continuity of ideas and the stylistic affinities which link the two currents together--the Hermetic and Apuleiuan. Now of the discourse itself--it is a sublime one, containing as it does such a loftiness and elegance of speech while being rigidly philosophical throughout the treatise's duration. Such a fusion of eloquence and philosophical grandeur, not doubt, befits a literary work attributed to Hermes. The setting for the Asclepius is based inside an Egyptian sanctuary; the dialogue is set between Hermes and Asclepius, with Tat and Hammon as hearers. Yet what they hear is not to be divulged due to the sacredness of Hermes' doctrines. Some of the key points Hermes addresses deal with: (1) Supreme Divinity: the One, the Good, (2) The Nature of the Cosmos [physical and metaphysical], (3) The Role of Deities [greater and lesser] in the Scheme of the Cosmos, (4) The Twofold Nature of Man: Mortal and Immortal, (5) and a Soteriology based upon Spiritual Knowledge and Understanding. It can be reasonably deduced, from the contents of the Asclepius, that they were inspired primarily by the writings of Plato and Plotinus, with secondary traces of ideas belonging to Gnosticism and Pythagoreanism. In sum, it should be said that the doctrines expressed in this discourse merit the readers close attention and respect. For they are not just pieces of philosophical thought enshrined in the catalogues of ancient literature; they have something to say to us today about the universe we live in and how to live in it. The Asclepius proposes a divine, self-knowledge that moves one to the love of God and his creation, the Cosmos in which we live in. The Perfect Discourse of Hermes is highly recommended. Also recommended is Apuleius' *On the God of Socrates, translated with pertinent elucidations, by the early 19th century Platonist, Thomas Taylor.

Clement Salaman's translation of this masterpiece combines intelligence, heart, and a depth of understanding of the message of Hermes Trismegistus. This is one of the great works of Western Civilization and continues the great work Mr. Salaman and his colleagues have done in translating the Letters of Marsilio Ficino (seven volumes and counting...we await more!), and the Poimandres dialogues of Hermes in "The Way of Hermes"....making these available to new readers. It is so full of love as well as reason and stands with the works of Plato and Ficino as a most important foundation of our philosophical tradition. It helps shine light on the works of Plato and the New Testament whose authors were clearly influenced by this language and school of thought. Just wonderful!

Clement Salaman has managed to translate The Perfect Discourse of Hermes Trismegistus into an accessible philosophical book. It is intelligently presented with a language full of love, reason and beauty. So much knowledge in one little book! It is one that I will keep close at hand to sit with again and again. Bravo!

The Asclepius is one of the first texts in Western Civilization expressing the unity between God and humanity. It is translated from the Latin with great care. Mr Salaman has done a brilliant job in making this work available in English. It is a seminal work, uplifting and worthy of great study

Okay so the presentation of this book is just fine, and its important as part of history. However, given what I had heard about Hermes Trismegistus and the Hermetic writing with the enthusiasm it was embraced in the Renaissance and the respect it garnered among some early church fathers (e.g. Lactantius) I was expecting something impressive and having read it I can say it was VERY unimpressive nonsense.
