About the Author

Ann Mah is a journalist and the author of two novels, The Lost Vintage and Kitchen Chinese. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, Washingtonian, the South China Morning Post, BonAppétit.com, Vogue.com, and other media outlets. In 2005, she was awarded a James Beard Foundation culinary scholarship. Mostly good things to say about this book, the writing is well done, the descriptions are pretty good and the story of Ann and Calvin is the best part! But...you have to wade through ALOT of French history to get to the story of Ann and Calvin! This would not be a shelf keeper for re-read for me but I am glad I read it. It is a different type of book than I normally read and I did slightly enjoy it, but it wasn't a page turner that I couldn't wait to come back to. I would definitely recommend it to people that are interested in certain French dishes and the history and culture surrounding those dishes...and in between the history and culture...you get a love story of Ann and Calvin.

Ignore the critics! This is a fabulous book. Ann Mah is a gifted writer and she weaves an engaging story about French food, culture and life as an expat. Those reviewers who complain that she mentions missing her husband a lot have never lived overseas, away from friends and family in a language that is not their own.If you are interested in France, food and the highs (and, yes, lows) of following your dreams, read this book. You won't be able to put it down!

Ms. Mah's writing is intelligent, well-researched and drily witty. While planning a trip to Paris, I decided to read this before starting in on all of the food guides. I was not disappointed. And the story of living alone in a new city resonates since I frequently travel alone and had to learn to get through all of the pitfalls that come with that. I particularly enjoyed that she included a recipe for each section that reflected what she encountered and most enjoyed. I look forward to utilizing much of the information that she provided and intend to check out her other works.

Unlike at lest one commenter here, I did not consider Ms Mah's inclusion of the history and regional differences in foods in France "an unnecessary distraction". Quite the contrary. Without them, the book would be just another tale of an American ex-pat unexpectedly alone in the City of Light struggling to fill her days during the year her diplomat husband is away in Baghdad. Rather than exploring as a mere tourist, she seeks out natives who are hands-on experts on a particular region, dish, vintage or process. One improvement I'd suggest, however, is all italicized utterances in French be followed by the English translation, an error committed by many authors who wrongly assume readers are bilingual. Not all are, which leaves those of us who aren't one of two (unwelcome) alternatives: keep GoogleTranslate cued up *or* be resigned to having no clue as to what was said by Ms Mah or whoever she was speaking to or with. Either is an unnecessary distraction in an otherwise delightful and informative page-turner.

In fact I hated to see it end. Ann Mah has written a thoughtful, informed and poetic guide to her first adventures in France. When her diplomat husband is called away to Iraq for a year at the very start of his 3 year assignment in Paris, Ann explores not only Paris, but takes us with her on her journeys to Brittany, Toulouse, Provence, Burgundy,and beyond. Her research is meticulous, she gives us the history of the foods of the regions she visits,as she goes boldly forth with knife and fork to try the famous dishes of each.Each chapter ends with a recipe of the specialty of the region, adapted to Ann's own educated palette. I shall be trying some out on friends soon!The happy reunion with her husband and their finding the perfect little Paris apartment on the very street Julia Child's apartment was, is frosting on the tasty cake this book serves up.I have given it to friends as a gift, and can't wait for my book club to sink our teeth into this delicious book.

This is a delightful insight into the origins and traditions of some of France's best-loved regional dishes. The author and her husband arrive in Paris for his 3-year assignment there with the diplomatic service, only to have him sent, unaccompanied, to Baghdad for a year. New to Paris, on her own for a year, she embarks upon her "education," which begins as a way to set aside loneliness and becomes an absorbing avocation. She describes her discoveries - both people and food - with affection and appreciation for their varied and colourful histories. The end of each chapter contains a recipe for the dish described. Whether you simply scan it and drool, or go about trying it for yourself, it's a nice afternoon's entertainment that teaches something as well.

It took me longer to read Ann Mah's "Mastering the Art of French Eating" than I had anticipated, because I savored every sentence, sometimes stopping to read a delicious or funny passage to my husband. And then there are the recipes at the end of each section that inspired me to put the book down and COOK! Wonderfully written, this memoir draws you into Mah's world as she navigates the challenges of a year without her husband nearby, settling into a new home in a new country, finding meaningful work and coming to terms with the type of life that comes with marring a diplomat. (It's an enviable life, to some or most, but we all have to reconcile what we expected from our lives and what we actually find or get.) In doing so, Mah burrows into the reader's heart with her humor, courage, humility, and gastronomic enthusiasm. This memoir would make a fun, touching and mouth-watering movie--I hope someone makes one! This is a fun summer read, but also fall, winter or spring, as there's a lot of cooking to be done afterwards and some of the dishes are best in cold weather!

I had high expectations about this book after reading so many four and five star reviews, but was very disappointed. I quickly grew weary of her constant complaining about having to endure life in Paris without her diplomat husband and felt her writing was just a half-hearted attempt to pass time while her husband was away. There was no evidence of the joy or enthusiasm about what should have been a delightful experience associated with eating and traveling in France. This read more like a blog than a book and really needed a good editor. I almost did not finish but persevered hoping it might get better. Unfortunately, it remained uninspired to the end.
