Okay so the book is a sweet, nostalgic, coming of age story about the sheltered boy coming from a dysfunctional upper class family and finding out how things work: out in the world of work and small towns after losing both his parents. His older brother doesn't want anything to do with him, and so sells the family house, dismisses the servants, and gives our protagonist a small sum of money to get an education and find a job. It has some really sweet moments that older readers will be easily to recognize and enjoy. The crux: there are many old cultural references and things that are not well explained or notated. The translation is also not very polished. Many sentences are choppy, and do not flow naturally. If you have experience with Japanese foreign exchange students you'll be able to recognize and translate what is meant to be said. If not this could be a difficult read for you.
I enjoyed reading this novel and recommend it highly to those who want to appreciate the work of Soseki Natsume.
Natsume isn't on the 1000 yen note for nothing! The story follows the exploits of a Tokyo work adverse boy who stumbles into a teachimg job in rural Shikoku, and with it conflict with the locals.My one criticism is the sub standard translation. It is certainly dated and at times difficult to understand or contains spelling and grammar errors.
This is a pretty good translation from the original Japanese. It's a story of a person living in the country who tries city living. He quickly learns money and luxury do not always make life easy. He must deal with the arrogant people and greedy ones. It reminds me a little of other books by Mark Twain rich characters with many quirk to them. It's funny also how the old Japanese school system with emphasis on memory and discipline is much like the school system I grew up in not too long ago. It shows the inside of Japan thinking.
"Botchan" was written by Soseki in 1905, and it is widely considered to be one of the most important works of Japanese literature, as it was one of the first modern works that touches on the conflict between traditional values and beliefs found in remote Japanese villages, and the influence of the West and a modern society in a major city such as Tokyo.The narrator is a young man of slight build but feisty spirit who has recently graduated from university with a degree in physics, who has been hired to teach mathematics in a middle school in a small rural town. Botchan is guided by his personal moral code and sense of duty, which is exceeded only by his self importance and pomposity. Almost immediately he runs afoul of several of the students in his classes, who torment him with blackboard comments and juvenile tricks. He subsequently angers his immediate supervisor, the principal of the school, and several of his fellow teachers, who conspire against him and his supervisor. Botchan strikes out against his accusers and foes, as he longs to return to Tokyo and to the old woman who served as the family maid during his troubled childhood, as she is the only person who nurtured and believed in him.Despite its short length of 92 pages, "Botchan" was a tedious read that seemed at least twice as long as it actually was. Not recommended.
Natsume Soseki was a famous Japanese literature author who passed away in 1916. His books are incredible.In "Botchan", he is offered a teaching job after graduation and collects his belongings, hops the train and ends up some godforsaken place called "Shikoku" as a mathematics teacher in a middle school. What he discovers upon arrival is a very odd bunch of characters for colleagues.Botchan decides to give them all nicknames like: Badger for the Principal; Redshirt for the Assistant Principal; Pale Squash for the English teacher; Porcupine for the other math teacher and Hanger-on for the art teacher. While reading the book you'll come to learn why he gives these odd fellow colleagues the nicknames he did.The story is hilarious and the poor guy goes through a lot with both the students, who one night fill his bed with 40 grasshoppers and the teachers who are supposedly his colleagues but in a most suspicious way.The story is light, funny and never slow moving. This is uninterrupted entertainment at it's best. You've definitely got to read this novel.This one will be in my permanent collection along with one of his other books: "Kokoro"
I'm the writer of the 2nd review. I came back here just to remind readers who are interested in reading the English translation of Natsume Soseki's masterpiece BOTCHAN: MAKE SURE THE ONE YOU GET IS THE ALAN TURNEY TRANSLATION PUBLISHED BY KODANSHA INTERNATILNAL!!!!!Why bother writing another review? Well, I think the 4th review written by Mr. Patrick Robbins may mislead readers buying a terrible translation. Judging from what Mr. Robbins wrote, "but this translation dates from the Twenties or so", the terrible translation he wrote about should be the one by Umeji Sasaki dates back to 1922 published by Tuttle. I know that one and it is horribly terrible. In fact, there are also other English translations but none can compare with the Alan Turney translation. Make sure you get the right one!
This book in the Turney translation is fantastic, but this translation dates from the Twenties or so. It is easily the worst 20th C translation I've ever read; the English will leave you scratching your head at least once on every page. The publisher should be ashamed of continuing to reprint this mockery. Buy the Kodansha edition! (Yes, even though the Japanese translator said he had a native English speaker look over his work, the native English speaker probably had too much tact and not enough time to clean up the translator's butchery of English. But, having lived in Japan for 4 years, I can say that I've witnessed similar displays of hubris on the part of a very few Japanese.)
