This is a very readable introduction to some of the major transformations that have brought us to where we are today. And no, it's not presented as a tragedy, but rather as a very readable and somewhat optimistic account of four major shifts in human prehistory and history that have occurred thus far. The author sees us as standing on the precipice of the fifth transformation. This is an ideal overview for the reader who does not want to become mired in detailed descriptions of every fossil hominin or traditional civilization that archaeologists and anthropologists have uncovered. A pleasant yet authoritative read with humorous asides and the occasional Dad joke.
In The Fifth Beginning, Kelly takes the long view of human history. Unlike some archaeological writings however, it doesn't take long to get through this book. Drawn in by Kelly's insight and his concise writing style, I didn't want to put the book down. Let's just say that in a global political climate that seems often dismal, it is heartening to read Kelly's prediction of a prosperous and peaceful future of humanity.
This book is a must-read for all humans! It traces the human story from its very beginnings, to the present day, and into the possibilities of our future as a species (spoiler: the future is up to us!). It is written in such a way as to be accessible to all readers, regardless of their background. It also manages to be quite funny at times, even though the subject is as serious as any can be. Also, do read the end notes- sometimes they are just citations from the text, but often they are little nuggets of amusing and surprising information that add to the overall experience of the book. Highly recommended!
A concise and thoughtful look at where we've been coupled with an optimistic perspective on where we could be headed. This is a rare archaeology book that focuses our attention on possible futures rather than gazing fondly on the pasts. Read it. Think about it, and think about what you might do about engaging the future.
A tour de force in archaeological thought. An outstanding account if the human journey to where we are today and where we could be heading, aka the 5th Beginning. Dr. Kelly's strightforward writing style is easy to understand and his anecdotes help make key points easier to digest.
Dr. Kelly has written a comprehensive but short review of most of the "truths" of the last 5 MILLION years! And in only 122 pages. Definitely worth your time to purchase this book. I spent a great deal of my time reviewing the information because I am a lifelong student of anthropology & all things "prehistory".
