As in last year's Why Courage Matters, McCain's latest volume uses biography as an illustration of virtue, but this time the senator broadens his palette significantly, telling 34 stories of heroes whose lives embody qualities ranging from honesty and loyalty to curiosity and enthusiasm. At the root of them all, he says, is a willingness to stay true to one's conscience against all challenges. Thus martyrs appear prominently, from Thomas More and Joan of Arc to Edith Cavell and Father Maximilian Kolbe, as do military heroes, including Pat Tillman, the pro football player whose love of country led him to enlist in the army shortly after 9/11. But the pantheon is inclusive enough to hold Aung San Suu Kyi and Gandhi alongside Churchill and Eisenhower. Although he is reaching out to a younger readership, McCain's plain but sincere language does not condescend to his audience. He makes occasional oblique references to his experiences as a prisoner of war—describing, for example, how they reinforce his understanding of Victor Frankl's concept of dignity—but the only chapter centered on his ordeal highlights a furtive moment of kindness from a Vietnamese soldier. Amid much speculation concerning his plans for 2008, McCain has made a declaration of values that liberals can embrace as readily as conservatives. This book shares more than 30 inspiring lessons in essay form that are exceptionally well-written. Each essay centers on a famous individual and a word that he or she encompasses. There are words to live by from Authenticity, Compassion, Confidence, and Courage to Forgiveness, Resilience, Responsibility, and Selflessness & Contentment. The stories are interesting and all offer a history lesson as well as interesting insights about a wide variety of characters. The individuals included are usual suspects such as Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and Mark Twain as well as others worth noting including Tecumseh, Wilma Rudolph, and Maximilian Kolbe.My favorite words are those from John McCain in his Afterword:"...All you have to do is become less selfish on the way out than you were coming in...It takes strength, not physical strength, but moral strength, the strength to sacrifice for an idea. It takes understanding and wisdom and a mind that questions beliefs and conventions that the heart suspects are false. And it takes love, love for something greater than yourself, love that is much more than desire or affection. It is a love that does not yield to disappointment or suffering, but recognizes and defends the good in this world, and in that purpose finds true happiness."Thank you John MCain! This is essential reading!
A marvelous, inspirational biography covering more than than 30 individuals, some well known and others lesser known. The readers for this book include the young and adults. The biography for individuals is short, mostly slightly over 10 pages per person. But the selections are just superb, reflecting the character of Senator McCain fairly well. Highly recommended.
I bought this book after reading The Restless Wave because I liked how it was written plus all the fascinating people he knew and met. So this book, Character is Destiny is thought-provoking and stimulating; so many, many fabulous people!!The stories are short enough to give the reader a good overview of the person. It caused me to continue to research many of them to know more, to look for more books about them.I highly recommend this book. It would have been one we would have read together as a family if I had obtained it years ago.It is a great book for homeschooling families. It would be excellent to use in conjunction with other curriculum that reinforces positive character traits.
These are wonderful glimpses into a number and variety of people who, in their own ways, have contributed to the well-being of the nations. Well written and certainly appropriate to these times, it gives one hope for the world.
These true stories are thoughtfully told, and are compelling & inspiring. We are thankful for the honorable character of the now late John McCain for blessing us all with this beautiful and moving book.
I loved this book. No political pressure which I was leery about. Most of the people he chose to feature I knew. I agreed with his choices as examples of each character trait
